For the Year of the Salish Sea, CPAWS-BC is raising awareness of ocean conservation in the region, particularly to help protect endangered Southern Resident killer whales and the unique glass sponge reefs found in the Strait of Georgia and Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound. Drop by to learn more about Salish Sea conservation, play trivia, and pick-up brochures and stickers.
The City of Richmond’s Environmental Programs Department is responsible for coordinating a number of services, including recycling, garbage collection, composting at home, and community and school engagement. Visit the booth for a fun upcycle activity, drop-in workshops, and enter a raffle.
The Fraser River Discovery Centre’s mission is to share the stories of the Fraser and inspire stewards of the river. Stop by for an interactive family activity at festival! Learn more about the biodiversity, geology, and history of the river.
GO Taiko
GO Taiko originated from free afterschool taiko classes at Admiral Seymour and Waverley Elementary Schools in East Vancouver. They are now based in Richmond. They started out as a youth taiko group but have now formed into exciting young adult taiko players who have performed at night markets, festivals, the PNE, and more.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society operates the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, in the historic fishing village of Steveston. Visit their booth to compete in a canning relay game, get creative with a twirly fish craft, contribute your story to the Cannery’s Fish Tales project, and learn how you can experience the stories of fishing on Canada’s West Coast.
The Richmond Carvers is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of woodcarving as a hobby and an art form. Founded in 1988, the Society has grown to over 74 members with skill levels ranging from beginner to internationally acclaimed experts. Come to the festival to see them at work and admire some of the beautiful carvings on display.
Richmond Fire-Rescue provides fire and life safety information to the community. For the festival, we’ll offer information on smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, fire code specifics, marine safety, and bylaw information. We’ll also promote our website, the first of its kind in British Columbia, which provides all of the above information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in 170 different languages.
As a member of Scouts Canada and the World Scout Organization, the Sea Dragon Sea Scout Group is dedicated to providing a challenging and educational program aimed at training today’s youth to becoming tomorrow’s leaders. The group offers Scouting programs in Richmond at Ferris Elementary School for youth ages 5-17.
