Mikoshi Display by Sakurakai with Steveston Takarajima Group

The Vancouver Mikoshi Sakurakai Society has partnered with children from Steveston’s Takarajima Group — made up of Japanese Canadian mothers and children who engage in social activities offered at the Steveston Buddhist Temple — to carry a traditional mikoshi mini-shrine, as seen in summer festivals throughout Japan. The mikoshi featured at the Richmond Maritime Festival was made in the seaside town of Chigasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture; an annual ocean festival is held every summer in the Chigasaki City, a fishing community, much like Steveston.
